Man accused of attacking woman and smelling her to check if she’d cheated

A man will appear before a judge later this month accused of attacking a woman on Christmas day and smelling her to check if she’d cheated.

Hemlington’s Ryan Summersgill appeared before Teesside magistrates last week to face five charges including beating a woman on December 25. The 31-year-old is also accused of intentional strangulation, controlling or coercive behaviour, making threats to damage and another count of assault against her.

The charges state: “On 25/12/2024 at Middlesbrough, without lawful excuse, threatened (alleged victim) that you would smash a phone and VR headset intending that she would fear that the threat would be carried out.

“Between 01/08/2024 repeatedly or continuously engaged in behaviour which was controlling or coercive, namely threatened to use violence including carrying of weapons, checking phone messages, demanding the changing of her phone and number and smelling the (alleged victim) to check for infidelity.

“On 30/10/2024 at Middlesbrough intentionally strangled (alleged victim). On 30/08/2024 at Middlesbrough assaulted (alleged victim) by beating her. On 25/12/2024 at Middlesbrough assaulted (alleged victim) by beating her.”

The defendant of Beckenham Gardens will appear at Teesside Crown Court on January 24. He has been remanded in custody until the next hearing.
