Man arrested as Gardaí and Revenue seize €70,000 cannabis haul in East Cork

A man has been arrested after Gardaí and Revenue Customs Officers seized €70,000 worth of cannabis as part of an intelligence-led operation in East Cork.

Tuesday’s raid led to 3.5kg of herbal cannabis being seized as evidence, and the drugs were sent to Forensic Science Ireland for a formal analysis.

The seizure was part of a joint operation between Gardaí and Revenue, with officers from the Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), and the Cork Divisional Drugs Unit all taking part.

Gardaí also made sure to acknowledge the assistance of drug detector dog Merlin, who helped locate the cannabis.

A man in his 30s arrested in connection with the investigation was detained at a Garda station in Cork under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. Gardaí confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

A Garda spokesperson said: “On Tuesday, 14th January 2025, as part of an intelligence-led operation, Gardaí arrested a man, and Revenue’s Customs Service seized approximately 3.5kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €70,000 in East Cork.

“This seizure was made as a result of a joint operation conducted by Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), the Cork Divisional Drugs Unit, and detector dog Merlin.

“The drugs seized are now subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland.

A man (aged in his 30’s) was arrested by An Garda Síochána in connection with the investigation and is currently detained at a Co. Cork Garda Station pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. Investigations are ongoing.”
