A man has been arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs whilst driving after a five-vehicle collision on the A1 Western Bypass this morning (Friday, January 10).
Shortly before 8am, reports were received about a collision on the northbound side of the A1 Western Bypass, at junction 77 Redcliffe Way.
Northumbria Police have now confirmed that it was a five-vehicle crash, but no one sustained serious injuries. They are appealing for witnesses, particularly those with dash cams, to contact them.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At around 7.30am today (Friday), we received a report of five-vehicle collision on the A1 near Kenton Bar.
“Emergency services attended, where no one was reported to have sustained serious injuries.
“A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs whilst driving. He is currently in police custody.
“Anyone who witnessed anything, or has dash cam footage of the incident, should contact us via direct message on social media, instant chat on our website, or submit information online.
“If you’re unable to contact us online, call 101.”
The road has since reopened, the collision has been cleared and traffic has returned to normal.
