Man charged in connection with murder of Cork woman Paula Canty in Mallow

Gardaí have charged a man in connection with the killing of a Cork woman whose body was found in an apartment in North Cork last week.

Paula Canty’s body was discovered with suspected stab wounds at an apartment along Bridewell Lane on Friday, January 3. A formal murder investigation was launched on Sunday after Gardaí received the results of a post-mortem.

Gardaí have been investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death of the 31-year-old. It’s believed Gardaí identified the chief suspect as a man known to Paula.

On Tuesday afternoon, Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s and held him at a Garda station in the southern region for questioning. He has since been charged and is due to appear before a court later this morning.

A Garda spokesperson said: “A man, aged in his 40s, who was arrested in relation to this investigation has been charged.

He is expected to appear before Midleton District Court at 11am this morning, Thursday 9th January 2025. Investigations are ongoing.”

Tributes poured in from across Cork following the death of Ms Canty, who was killed just days shy of her 32nd birthday. The mum of two was described by those known to her as ‘a lovely young lady’.

A memorial fund has been set up in her honour, which has so far raised more than €2,400 for Cork’s Street Angels. A local volunteer group that does commendable work to keep people experiencing homelessness fed and warm.
