Man fighting for life in Dublin hospital after baseball bat attack

This man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was struck with a baseball bat in an attack in Monaghan.

Declan Wallace (47) was discovered in a badly injured state on the street of Park Road in Monaghan town – after being violently assaulted sometime between 10pm and 11pm on Tuesday night. Gardai and emergency services rushed to the area and discovered the man in a serious condition – with life-threatening injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, where his condition has been described as critical. It is understood he sustained extremely serious head injuries.

It is suspected he was attacked by a number of men using a bat as a weapon. It is feared Mr Wallace got into an argument and was attacked by a number of men who fled the scene.

As a result of a suspected bleed to the brain he was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he remains fighting for his life. Three people – two men and a woman, have since been arrested on suspicion of his assault.

Local Councillor Seamus Treanor said he was shocked to learn of the attack – and said incidents of this nature are occurring too often. “It’s unbelievable. Unfortunately we need more law and order and we need the judges to be judges and start sentencing people. There’s too much bail and legal aid going on in this country. These assaults are going on around the country and it’s outrageous,” he said.

Meanwhile officers have appealed for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Any persons who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the Park Road area between 10pm and 11pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047 77200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
