Man’s ‘disgraceful’ behaviour causes ‘absolute hell’

A “loud and aggressive” troublemaker threatened to smash a man’s windows and kill him after repeatedly demanding a bank card because he urgently needed money.

Fired-up and hot-headed Andrew Broadbent also bombarded a woman with emails and made her life “absolute hell” after becoming abusive during his “disgraceful” antics, Hull Crown Court heard.

Broadbent, 53, of Windsor Crescent, Bridlington, but recently in custody on remand, admitted offences of making threats to kill, harassment and stalking.

Eleanor Mitten, prosecuting, said that, on March 11 last year, a man received a telephone call and recognised that it was Broadbent who was calling him. Broadbent told him that he needed money and asked him to come over with a bank card.

“He became loud and aggressive,” said Miss Mitten. Broadbent continued to shout and swear and the other man ended the call. Broadbent called again many times, demanding a bank card. The man continued to refuse.

Broadbent threatened to come to the house, smash windows and kill him, although the man did not believe that he would carry out the threats. His wife later alerted the police.

On another occasion, Broadbent became aggressive when he went to a woman’s home and she would not let him in. He sent a series of emails to her about being short of money and used “abusive and derogatory language”.

He threatened to take his temper out on her partner and said that he was ready for a “war” against her and others. He made requests for money, continued to send emails and said that he was prepared to go to prison. The woman later said that Broadbent’s behaviour had caused “absolute hell for the past month”.

Broadbent had convictions for 24 previous convictions, mainly of violence, between 1987 and 2016. His most recent conviction was for violent disorder in 2016.

David Godfrey, mitigating, said that Broadbent had been in custody for about eight-and-a-half months since April 17 last year. He had suffered problems.

“His feeling is one of absolute regret now,” said Mr Godfrey. “Real shame has set in. He acknowledges that his behaviour was disgraceful.”

Judge Gurdial Singh that the offences committed by Broadbent were serious. But he added: “No violence was ever used.”

Broadbent was given an 18-month community order, with 25 days’ rehabilitation. He was released from the court’s cells several hours after being sentenced.
