A number of planned roadworks will cause traffic disruption and road closures in Merton throughout the start of 2025. Affected areas include Mitcham, New Malden and Wimbledon.
Merton Council has apologised for any disruption caused in advance and encouraged drivers to take different routes on the affected days. We have compiled a list of the current planned works below. Some are ongoing works that have been in place for some time, while many are new works starting this month.
Outside No.6 Streatham Road, Mitcham
Merton Council is in the process of installing new cycle lanes and crossing points. Works began on August 26 and are expected to be completed by February 28.
A217 London Road, Mitcham
Thames Water will carry out three-stage mains replacement works on the busy road. Lane closures and temporary lights are expected. At the London Road junction with Baron Grove work will start on January 13 and be completed by January 24. On the section of London Road opposite Baron Grove, work will start on January 27 and be completed by February 7. And on the section of London Road at the junction with Broadway Gardens, work will start on February 24 and be completed by March 21.
Later in the year, Thames Water will also carry out mains replacement works along London Road. Lane closures are expected. Work will start on April 30 and be completed by June 17.
A236 Western Road, Mitcham
Temporary traffic lights enabling Thames Water to carry out mains replacement works between Bond Road and Raleigh Gardens will remain in place. Works began on November 12 and are expected to be completed by April 29.
A road closure will also be necessary to enable the implementation of a new gas service. Work will start on February 24 and is expected to take five working days.
Commonside East, Mitcham
Thames Water will be carrying out water mains replacement works on the side of Date Valley School in late spring. Work will start on March 24 and is expected to take 15 working days.
Consfield Avenue, New Malden
Consfield Avenue is currently closed to enable SGN to complete repairs to a leaking gas main. Work began in January and is expected to take seven working days.
Coombe Lane, Raynes Park
There will also be temporary traffic lights at Coombe Lane in Raynes Park to enable Thames Water to implement a new water connection. Multi-way lights will be in use at the junction with Cambridge Road. Work will start on January 14 and is expected to take 15 working days.
Crusoe Road, Mitcham
Merton Council will close Crusoe Road for essential carriageway resurfacing works later this month. Work will start on January 27 and is expected to take 10 working days.
Merton Civic Centre where the council is based
Cricket Green, Mitcham
Multi-way lights will be used at the junction with Bramcote Avenue to enable Thames Water to replace water mains. Work will start on February 10 and is expected to take 12 working days.
Eastfields Road, Mitcham
The Mitcham road will be closed so that Network Rail can complete track servicing and inspections of the level crossing. Work will start on January 18 and is expected to take two days.
The road will again be closed when work resumes on March 30. These works are expected to take two nights between 2am and 5am.
Grenfell Road, Mitcham
Merton Council has closed Grenfell Road in Mitcham to complete carriageway and footway adjustment works. They plan to create buildouts at the junction with London Road. Work began on January 6 and is expected to take five working days, ending on Saturday January 11.
Haydons Road, South Wimbledon
Lane closures will be in place between Gap Road/Plough Lane and Haydon Park Road later this month for essential Merton Council works. Work will start on January 20 and is expected to take 20 working days.
Haydons Road, South Wimbledon
Two-way temporary lights will be outside No.43 so Thames Water can replace a lead service pipe. Work will start on January 27 and is expected to take five working days.
Hillcross Avenue, Morden
Two-way lights will also be placed on this Morden road for SES Water to repair the defective carriageway patch outside No.96. Work will start on January 13 and is expected to be completed on January 17.
Kingsley Road, Wimbledon
Merton Council will close Kingsley Road next week for entry treatment works at the junction with Haydons Road. Work will start on January 13 and is expected to take five working days.
Kingston Road, Raynes Park
A contra-flow is currently in place on Kingston Road. MUA Electricity is completing surface water and sewer connections in collaboration with electrical ducting works. Work began on January 6 and is expected to take 10 working days.
Kingston and Kingswood Road, Wimbledon
Temporary traffic lights and a road closure will be in place on Kingston and Kingswood Road next month to allow Cellnex to carry out crane operations at the nearby telephone exchange. Work will start on February 2 and is expected to take one day.
Links Road, Mitcham
Merton Council will close Links Road to carry out carriageway and footway adjustment works to create buildouts at the junction with London Road. Work will start on January 13 and is expected to take five working days.
Morden Road, South Wimbledon
Thames Water will require a lane closure on this South Wimbledon road next month to enable a water meter exchange. Work will start on February 20 and is expected to take two working days.
Martin Way, Morden
Temporary traffic lights will be put in place to enable the construction of a zebra crossing near the junction of Mostyn Road. Merton Council will also be closing of Mostyn Road. Work will start on February 17 and is expected to take 10 working days.
West Barnes Lane, New Malden
A road closure will be in place at the New Malden Level Crossing to enable inspections, access, or maintenance to be carried out at the level crossing. Network Rail will start work on January 20 and it’s expected to take four nights between 11pm and 5am.
Further work will recommence on February 8 and will take 24 hours between 11pm and 11pm. Work will recommence on February 24 and is expected to take five working days. Then work will recommence one last time on April 14 and will take four working days between 11.50pm and 5am.
