More than 20 firefighters raced to a blaze at a Birmingham tip. Six crews were sent to the Veolia-run household recycling centre and energy recovery facility at Tyseley just before 9.45am today, Tuesday, January 14.
West Midlands Fire Service said it involved an indoor rubbish pit around 15m x 15m in size. Nobody was hurt and everyone at the site was accounted for.
Firefighters were said to have have made good progress extinguishing the fire using two hoses. The centre remained in operation and waste processing continued.

West Midlands Fire Service said: “Shortly before 9.45am on Tuesday we responded to James Road in the Tyseley area of Birmingham. Six fire engines and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle attended, crewed by firefighters from Hay Mills, Highgate, Ladywood, Sheldon, Billesley and Aldridge stations.
“The first crew arrived within four minutes of being mobilised. This is a fire at a waste recycling facility, affecting an indoor rubbish pit approximately 15m x 15m in size.

“Firefighters have made good progress extinguishing the fire using two hoses. A water cannon housed at the site has also been in use, as has a crane system, that is moving the affected waste from the pit to the incinerator after visibility significantly improved.
“There have been no casualties or injuries and everyone has been accounted for. Normal waste processing continues as firefighters work to bring this incident to a conclusion.
“We have scaled down at this incident, with two fire engines and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle still in attendance.”
