A driver ended up with their car underneath a road sign on the edge of the M8 after an incident while driving northbound on the motorway during bad weather.
Videos and pictures of the bizarre scene – a bright orange car stuck under a massive road sign atop a 3-metre verge – have been shared widely across social media and around Whatsapp groups, with many using it as a warning to take care driving in adverse conditions.
The hatchback car left the motorway shortly before the Mitchelstown exit, Junction 13, mounted the steep verge and collided with the large road sign in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The accident happened at around 4 am during a Status Orange weather warning, a time when North Co Cork in particular was getting some of the worst of the cold snap conditions with severe snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Gardaí were alerted to the accident that morning and thankfully there were no injuries reported as a result of the crash. The motorist was lucky to walk away from the crash scene unscathed – but the position of the car may be an issue for the tow truck driver.
Motorway maintenance crews have since put cones around the car and where it left the road.
A gardai spokesperson said: “Gardaí were alerted to a road traffic incident on the M8 road near Junction 13, County Cork on Sunday 5th January 2025.
“The incident occurred at approximately 4 am. A vehicle came off the road. No injuries have been reported at this time.”
