Nearly 180 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of drink or drugs over the festive period after a crackdown led by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), supported by Northumbria Police.
Many more people were reported as the NPCC launched the operation from December 1, 2024 to January 1, 2025.
The campaign saw officers increasing patrol activity on the region’s roads, as well as carrying out more vehicle stops in a bid to put a stop to offending drivers.
The targeted activity led to nearly 180 drivers being arrested for offences, including: 98 people for driving while under the influence of alcohol, 39 for driving while under the influence of drugs, 35 for driving while unfit through alcohol or drugs, and three for failure to provide a sample.
Sergeant Glen Robson, of Northumbria Police’s dedicated Road Safety team, said: “We back this campaign every December as unfortunately figures show the festive period sees a spike in drink and drug driving.
“Our latest results speak volumes, as we arrested a significant number of drivers who, for the most part, were suspected of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.
“There really is no excuse to take such a risk – you could ruin your own life in doing this, as well as the lives of countless others. As ever, we would urge people to be responsible and make plans in advance to get home safely after having a drink or socialising. The cost of a taxi is far less than the price you would pay for causing another person serious injury or harm – or even death.
“Anyone who is willing to take that gamble should know that we will catch up with you, and put you before the courts if found to be over the limit.”
Anyone who wishes to report a drink or drug driver to Northumbria Police can send a direct message to the Force on social media or use the live chat and report forms on their website.
Those unable to make contact in this way can call 101. In an emergency, and where someone is at immediate risk, always dial 999. Members of the public can also assist Northumbria Police by submitting any dashcam footage through their dedicated portal here.
