Temporary diversions will be in place in Newcastle city centre as roadworks begin next week on Worswick Street. From January 13, the road between Pilgrim Street and Carliol Square will be fully closed to traffic, as coordinated work by Newcastle City Council and Northern Powergrid takes place.
This includes kerb works at the Worswick Street and Pilgrim Street junction, and the installation of ducts at the Worswick Street and Carliol Square junction. The temporary closure of Worswick Street is expected to remain in place until Saturday March 2.
During this period, signed diversions will be in place, with Carliol Square able to be accessed via John Dobson Street and Carliol Street. Access to Worswick Street will continue for emergency services vehicles at times when it is safe.
Pedestrian will still be able to Worswick Street, with cyclists advised to follow any signed diversion routes, or to dismount and walk through the impacted area.
Cllr Juna Sathian, Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport at Newcastle City Council, said: “These works will enable us to complete the next stage of highways improvements in this part of the city centre.
“There’s a lot of development taking place on and around Pilgrim Street, including the development of the new HMRC building which will bring thousands of jobs into the city centre. Our highways and public realm improvements are an important part of the transformation of this area.
“Wherever possible we are coordinating our works with other partners on site to reduce disruption to people’s journeys.”
As part of the overall works, new paving, improved pedestrian crossings and a two-way cycle lane have been installed on Pilgrim Street, Market Street and Mosley Street, and the majority of the remaining work is expected to be completed by March 2025.
