A man has sadly lost his life following a kitchen fire.
The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) were called to the scene by the ambulance service at approximately 10:44 am on Monday, January 6, to a residence in the West Auckland area of County Durham, where a kitchen fire had taken place.
Within six minutes of receiving the call, two fire engines from Bishop Auckland were on site and confirmed that the fire had been extinguished. Unfortunately, a man in his 90s was pronounced dead at the scene by the ambulance service.
A joint investigation by CDDFRS and Durham Constabulary suggests that an unattended chip pan was the cause of the fire, and a report will be submitted to the coroner. CDDFRS Group Manager Chris Williams expressed his condolences, saying: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family following this devastating incident.”
He highlighted the harsh reality of fire risks, stating: “At tragic times like this we are reminded of the dangers of fire and the reality that fire kills.”, reports Chronicle Live.
Emphasising the importance of fire safety, he urged: “Nothing matters more to us than the safety of those who live in our communities, and we would like to appeal to every household to make sure you have working smoke alarms.”
Williams also advised residents to regularly check their smoke alarms and to contact the fire service for assistance if they do not have one, as firefighters can install them during free Home Fire Safety Visits (HFSV). He concluded by encouraging community support: “We ask that you all please reach out to your neighbours – particularly those who are older and living alone – and offer to test their smoke alarms or help arrange a HFSV from their local fire crews.”
Firefighters from Bishop Auckland will be on hand in the local area to provide reassurance and home fire safety advice to residents. To arrange a complimentary Home Fire Safety Visit, which includes smoke alarm testing and fitting, please call 0345 223 4221 or visit the CDDFRS website.
