Community leaders and fed-up families are calling for action over key city roads routinely left under water. Heavy rain has been regularly submerging Leek New Road in both Stockton Brook and Milton – with the latest incident seeing concerned motorists performing U-turns.
The nearby Baddeley Green Lane – near the junction with the A53 – has also been left resembling a lake during downpours. Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council has been told the long-running saga is ‘not good enough’.
The message from ward councillors comes after concerns were raised on New Year’s Eve in 2023 – only for the same roads to be under water on New Year’s Day this year. StokeonTrentLive reported on January 1 as hours of heavy rain completely submerged Leek New Road in Milton near to its junction with Braithwell Drive where drivers were seen turning around.

It also hit Baddeley Green Lane near to the Nursery Lane junction and the A53 near to Bunts Lane in Stockton Brook.
Conservative ward councillor Dave Evans had contacted the city council back on December 31, 2023. In his e-mail councillor Evans told the authority the issues have ‘been going for years’.
It was an unwanted anniversary when heavy downpours again left the same roads under water a year on.
Councillor Evans told StokeonTrentLive: “Carl Edwards and I have repeatedly raised the issue of flooding on the A53 and on Baddeley Green Lane with the city council. At the same time that Stoke town is having major investment to stop flooding. It does feel that the edge of the city is being abandoned on this issue. It simply isn’t good enough.”

Labour councillor Duncan Walker, who also represents Baddeley Green, Milton and Norton, said: “I’m aware of the situation and have spoken to council officers to look into a long-term solution. The flooding that took place at New Year followed very heavy rain which affected large parts of the country and that has also to be taken into account. We respond as quickly as we can to incidents like this and encourage anyone who is aware of a flooding issue to report it.”

The section of Baddeley Green Lane by the petrol station was again under water on Monday (January 6). Highways crews were spotted at the scene in Baddeley Green working to make it passable.
That came as flooding hit scores of roads across North Staffordshire and also shut part of the A34 through Talke. There were also flood warnings issued in the county as heavy rain and melting snow wreaked havoc. Since then and temperatures plummeted and heavy snow returned.

Frozen snow remains across the area – while temperatures are set to start rising at the start of next week in what is likely to see the white stuff melting.
