The £132 million roundabout at Old Street was completed in 2024 after five years of work, but ‘minor works’ will continue until March. The project saw alterations inside and outside Old Street station, including the introduction of cycle lanes and new pedestrian crossings and the modernisation of the station with new entrances, lifts, and a roof.
The project was initially meant to be completed by June 2024 but was actually finished in September 2024. There are still outstanding ‘minor works’ being done at the site, projected to last until March 2025, TfL said.
Helen Cansick, TfL’s Head of Healthy Streets Investment, said: “Before work on this project started, Old Street was one of the most dangerous junctions in London, which is why it was essential for us to take action to make the roads safer.
“The project was complex because of interfaces with the station entrance and retail arcade, and significant challenges, including the pandemic, resulted in a much longer construction phase than was anticipated.”

She added: “We’re very grateful to everyone who lives and works in the area for their patience during construction. The project was completed in September 2024 and some minor additional work continues. We believe the redevelopment, large new public space, and new road layout will stand the test of time and mean that fewer people will have to experience the devastation caused by collisions and road danger.”
The project saw setbacks, such as the need for a complete redesign of the new main entrance to the station and the need for Islington Council to award planning permission for additional lifts.

They also needed to adhere to fire and electrical safety standards. The site was also shut down for three months during the pandemic, and during construction, teams unearthed several ‘uncharted utilities’ that needed removal.
The northwest arm has been permanently closed to all traffic in the road layout redesign and a new public space has been added.
