A man remains in hospital with serious injuries after two separate crashes on the same part of the A19 in County Durham on Sunday.
The A19 was closed for several hours from 5am on Sunday after two separate crashes at the same location near Castle Eden. In the first, shortly before 5am, an Audi is believed to have collided with a lamp post.
As officers were at the scene, a Toyota collided with a stationary police car and a different lamp post. The drivers of both cars were arrested in connection with driving offences.
The Audi driver was taken to North Tees Hospital with serious injuries, where he remains today. No one else is believed to have been injured in the crash.
The Toyota driver has been released on bail while further enquiries are carried out.
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary issued an appeal on Sunday, saying: “Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or the Audi prior to the collision. If you have any information or dashcam footage, contact the force’s Collision Investigation Unit by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 44 of January 12.”
