A pensioner has died in Edinburgh after emergency services closed off a busy road near the city’s Omni Centre. Crews raced to a bus on Greenside Place in the city centre after the alarm was raised at around 5.30pm on Saturday.
Ambulance crews attended but the 70-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. It’s understood the man took unwell and there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.
Last night, Edinburgh Trams warned commuters travelling to the airport from Picardy Place to expect disruption. Lothian Buses also issued a warning to travellers to expect diversions around Leith Street.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: “Around 5.30pm on Saturday, January 11, 2025, officers received a report of a 70-year-old man having taken unwell on a bus in Greenside Place, Edinburgh. Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The death is being treated as unexplained, however there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
Last night, Lothian Buses said: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Leith street and are instead diverted via Montrose Terrace and Waterloo Place citybound only until further notice.” It’s understood the road has now reopened.
