Person hit by train in Northumberland died, police confirm death on railway

A person was struck by a train near a level crossing in Northumberland.

Emergency services received a report about the incident at around 6.30am on Saturday and went to a railway line near Cragmill Level Crossing in Belford. Police say a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is not being treated as suspicious. Officers will now be preparing a file for the coroner.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: “BTP officers attended the line close to Cragmill Level Crossing in Belford on Saturday 4th January after a report that a person had been struck by a train. Officers from BTP attended the incident, and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“A person was located but was pronounced dead at the scene. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Following the incident, train services were affected between Newcastle and Edinburgh and there were also delays on other parts of the network. Train services were allowed to resume at around 8.30am and delays were cleared by around 10am.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “At approximately 6.35am this morning, reports were received of a person being struck by a train near Belford. As a result, train services between Newcastle and Edinburgh were disrupted and delayed to enable our teams and emergency services to respond to the incident. Following a thorough investigation, train services were allowed to resume safely at around 8.30am.”
