Authorities are working with with experts, including geologists, to determine the cause of a sinkhole that opened in a playing field.
Redcar and Cleveland Council say that attempts to secure the site in Eston Recreation Ground have been affected by anti-social behaviour. The public are being urged to stay away for their own safety, with plans for a permanent perimeter fence to be installed.
The sinkhole appeared in “Eston Rec” towards the end of last year. Teesside Live reported how grandmother Carol Carne was terrified she would drown after falling in attempting to help her dog.
The hole was estimated to be 12 ft deep. Carol had to be pulled from the freezing water by passers by who heard her screams.
The latest statement from Redcar and Cleveland Council says: “For your own safety, please continue to avoid the area on Eston Recreation Ground where a sinkhole has appeared. We are in consultation with experts, including geologists, to determine the cause of the hole and to look at how we can make the area safe again.
“A full survey of the area will be carried out, but we believe the sinkhole has formed at the same location as a borehole from the old mining works. We will keep the public informed as and when we know more.”
“Pedestrian barriers and Heras fencing were previously removed by persons unknown from the area and other attempts to secure the site have been affected by anti-social behaviour. Therefore, a more permanent robust perimeter fence is to be installed to form a compound area.
“This compound area will incorporate the sinkhole and additional area around the perimeter of the sinkhole to accommodate any potential further subsidence. Regular inspections of this compound will ensure it is maintained and restricts the public gaining access.
“We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and update accordingly. Please keep all dogs on leads if you’re walking them nearby.”
