Plans have been lodged to install new lighting equipment at a major town centre venue.
Proposals have been submitted to Hartlepool Development Corporation to install a replacement lighting gantry and supporting steelwork at the Town Hall Theatre in Raby Road. The grade II listed building reopened in September 2024 after being closed from March to enable Hartlepool Borough Council to carry out “essential” inspections and repairs to old fibrous plasterwork ceilings.
Planning documents note the site has “undergone an updated building fabric condition and structural assessment” and as part of this process, a number of existing modern interventions, such as lighting rigs, were removed. Replacements are now required, which has led to the latest application being submitted by council officers for listed building consent for the “new, lightweight, modern lighting gantry”.
Currently freestanding temporary lighting is in place on the balconies. However the proposals would “provide a ‘fit for purpose’ technical lighting offer that will secure the use of the building as a theatre venue”, according to the plans.
