Plymouth’s new ice bath gym ready to open in the Barcode as date revealed

A 24-hour gym featuring freezing ice baths is preparing to open in Plymouth’s £53m Barcode leisure complex. The Trident Gym will also include a health and wellness centre, premium weight machines, fitness equipment, and saunas.

It will open on Saturday, February 1, but founder members can receive exclusive early access from Saturday, January 25. Trident Gym bosses expect the addition of saunas and ice baths will elevate Plymouth’s “wellness and recovery offerings”, putting the city in line with a rapidly growing trend across the UK.

Cold-water immersion has gained a rise in popularity in recent years, after being popularised by a raft of celebrities from Vogue Williams to David Beckham, with thousands of people across the UK starting their day with a glacial dip.

The combination of sauna bathing and cold plunging is thought to offer numerous health benefits, including increased energy levels, reducing stress and anxiety, relieving pain and inflammation, fat burning, and improved sleep quality.

By integrating these facilities, Trident Gym provides members with advanced recovery tools that promote muscle recovery, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall well-being. Open 24 hours a day, Trident Gym bosses said the venue will ensure “unparalleled convenience and accessibility, fitting seamlessly into any lifestyle”, with memberships starting from £35 per month.

In addition, Trident Gym also offers expert personal trainers who are available to support members in reaching their fitness goals with personalised programs and one-on-one sessions.

Trident said flexible personal trainer sessions are available by appointment to fit any schedule, ensuring everyone from complete beginners to seasoned athletes can achieve their full potential.

Greg Lumley, centre director at British Land-owned Drake Circus Shopping Centre and The Barcode, said: “Trident Gym’s arrival at The Barcode is the perfect way for us to welcome in the new year.

“Across 2024, we continued to successfully enhance our offering across health, food and drink and leisure to bring Plymouth locals the best shopping experience possible. Trident Gym will only enhance that offering further, it will be a top-notch fitness facility that not only provides advanced equipment but will also foster a sense of belonging.”

Trident Gym also has gyms in Weston-super-Mare, where it is headquartered, and Bridgwater. It is opening in Unit 11 at The Barcode, on the lower ground floor next to the car park entrance, which has been vacant since the complex opened in 2019.

A spokesperson for Trident Gym said: “We pride ourselves on being more than just a gym; we’re a community. Our goal is to support everyone, whether you’re a bodybuilder, powerlifter, CrossFit enthusiast, or just looking to improve your health.

“With engaging classes, monthly challenges, and lively events, we’re passionate about helping you achieve your goals while enjoying the journey.”
