Police investigating imposter healthcare worker who visited patients’ homes

Police are investigating reports of an imposter healthcare worker who visited patients’ homes in Saltash, claiming to be from their GP surgery. Saltash Police shared a statement on Facebook to warn residents to check with their GP if someone calls to offer a home visit and to ask for ID from anyone coming into their homes, following two incidents last week.

The local police force said the unknown man claimed to be from the NHS but officers have been unable to verify this. The man is described as being white, around 5ft 8in tall and of medium build with very short receding grey hair and a grey goatee style beard.

Officers have said in both incidents the caller, and the male himself, have stated he is called “Gerry”. He is believed to be driving a blue BMW.

The post on Facebook said: “We are aware of two incidents where Saltash residents have received a phone call to arrange a visit from a healthcare professional and have subsequently had a visit from a male, who we are unable to identify. Although the caller has stated on the phone that the visit has been arranged with the knowledge of the residents’ surgery, this is not the case.”

It added: “If you receive a call that is not directly from your GP’s surgery offering a home visit, please take the caller’s details and check with your GP if this is correct. If you receive a home visit, even if it has been pre-arranged, always ask for ID and which company or organisation they are from. Do not just ring a number from an ID card and if you have any doubts about their identity, do not let them in. If anyone would like ‘No Cold Callers’ door stickers, please let us know.”

Devon and Cornwall Police has since said it is not aware of any offences having been committed and the man’s intentions remain unknown. It added it will not be releasing any images to the public at this time.

Anyone with any information which would assist police in identifying the male is asked to please call 101 or contact the force online here quoting log 184 of 10th January 2025.
