Police launched a manslaughter investigation after the death of a 33-year-old man at a Stoke-on-Trent bail hostel. Staffordshire Police arrested two men on suspicion of manslaughter and supplying class A drugs following the death of Carl Sheldon.
But the suspects were later released without charge following the March 2021 tragedy. Now an inquest has this week ruled that Carl died of natural causes.
The inquest heard Carl had been found slumped on the floor of the Wharf Lane bail hostel, in Shelton.
North Staffordshire coroner Sukhdev Garcha ruled that Carl died of natural causes.
He said: “Having considered the evidence, I conclude that Carl Andrew Sheldon died due to a cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation. The medical cause of death is cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation and early repolarisation in the presence of chronic novel psychotic substance use. Carl Andrew Sheldon died on March 8, 2021 at Wharf Lane Hostel, on Rectory Road, of a cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation. The short-form conclusion is Carl Andrew Sheldon died of natural causes.”
