Power cut to Leicestershire homes and road to be shut ‘for hours’ after crash

Homes in part of Leicestershire are without power, and a road is likely to be closed for several hours, after a vehicle hit a telegraph pole. Leicestershire Police said that the B587, near Newbold Coleorton, was closed from the junction with Burney Lane to the junction with Nottingham Road and Melbourne Road after the crash.

The incident was reported to police at 7.40am today (Thursday January 9). Nobody was injured in the incident. However a force spokesman said a cable had “come down” following the vehicle striking the pole.

In an update at 11.15am, Leicestershire Police said that National Grid was taking over the road closure and advised a “wait time of six hours” before the road might be re-opened. A spokesman for National Grid said that the crash had led to power cuts in the area.

He said: “Owing to a vehicle colliding with a telegraph pole, we are undertaking emergency repairs on the B587 between Burney Lane and Nottingham Road. A power cut is currently affecting 17 properties in the area, and the road between these junctions will remain closed while we make the scene safe and complete the necessary repairs.

“We’re working as fast as we can to repair the overhead line, restore power and get the road open to traffic again. We’d like to thank motorists and our customers for their patience while we resolve the issue.”
