Residents urged to shape one part of Leicestershire ‘up to 2041 and beyond’

Residents are being urged to shape the future of one part of Leicestershire “up to 2041 and beyond”. Consultation on the Oadby and Wigston Borough Council (OWBC) Local Plan opened last Friday, January 10.

The consultation on the draft plan is open to residents, businesses and organisations and will run for six weeks, until 12pm on Friday, February 21. The plan takes into account factors including the built and natural environment, housing, infrastructure, open space, employment and community facilities.

The plan will run until 2041, however, the government require that Local Plans – strategic documents that set out where development can and cannot take place – must be reviewed at least every five years, allowing for the council to respond to new issues and challenges that might have emerged.

Alongside the current consultation, OWBC said the local plan consultation will take into account comments during earlier stages of consultation in 2021 and 2024, including feedback from the public drop-ins held in April 2024.

Councillor Samia Haq, Leader of OWBC, said: “Our new draft Local Plan sets out our vision to create a sustainable, vibrant future for Oadby & Wigston for all those that live or work in the borough. Our current adopted Local Plan has, and continues to provide, a robust framework to guide development within the borough.

“Updating and refreshing this with our new plan will ensure we maintain this position, and the public’s views are key to this process. We’re now entering the final stages of fine tuning the plan and I’d encourage the public once again to share their comments and help us shape the future of our borough up to 2041 and beyond.”
