Overnight closures will continue this week and throughout January as work continues on the A63 Castle Street project.
National Highways has issued an update confirming plans for closures on 17 nights this month. Most will see the road closed in both directions between Roger Millward Way and Daltry Street between 8pm and 6am.
They are as follows:
- Thursday 9 and Friday 10 January (2 nights)
- Monday 13 to Friday 17 January (5 nights)
- Monday 20 to Friday 24 January (5 nights – Tuesday 21 January – delayed westbound closure – 11pm)
- Monday 27 to Friday 31 January (5 nights – Thursday 30 January – westbound closure only).
A fully-signed diversion will be in place via the A15, A164, A1079 and A1033 for eastbound traffic, and vice versa for westbound.
National Highways has recently said “there are no issues with the delivery of the underpass” after estimated completion of the £355m scheme was delayed until Spring 2026. Work was originally expected to finish this year.
The reason for the additional year required has been put down to “a number of smaller issues experienced which have contributed to the delay due to the complex and linear nature of the construction sequence for the works.”
Work on the project began almost five years ago in 2020.
