Serious road accident closes main West Cork route

Gardai are investigating a serious accident involving a single car on the edge of Clonakilty – and there are traffic restrictions on the approach to the town on the N71. There are reports locally of a fatality, but Gardai have yet to confirm any details.

Cork County Council warned travllers this morning that the N71, Clonakilty at Faxbridge (Scallys Supervalu) Roundabout has been closed by Gardai following the incident.

The Council said: “N71 Traffic is being diverted at Maxol Roundabout via R588 to Shannonvale to Ballinascarthy and at N71 Ballinascarthy in the opposite direction.”

The accident happened shortly before 1am at the Faxbridge Roundabout, opposite the well-known Scally’s SuperValu. A car, believed to be travelling at speed on the Old Timoleague Road, went out of control and hit a wall.

There was a major response from the Gardai and National Ambulance Service and first responders were quickly on the scene.

A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo this morning: “Gardaí are at the scene of a serious road traffic collision in Clonakilty, Co. Cork that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 th January.”

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the single vehicle collision on the N71 in Clonakilty town at approximately 12:15am. The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place. No further information is available at this time.”
