Seven Sisters Overground step-free access paused over ‘funding shortfall’

Work to bring step-free access to Seven Sisters Overground station has been paused due to a funding shortfall, say Transport for London. The station, which lies on the Weaver line, was due to have lifts installed this year to provide passengers with step-free access.

However, Transport for London has now confirmed that this has been paused due to a “funding shortfall.” The additional costs have been put down to the certification of a new lift type and “general inflationary pressures.”

Seven Sisters Overground Station is one of five London stations where work is ongoing to deliver step-free access. The others include Brondesbury, Hackney Downs, Peckham Rye and Surrey Quays.

The works are part of the Department for Transport’s Access for All Scheme. This has brought step-free access to 250 since 2006.

MyLondon understands that the proposed design and estimated costs for the project are still being reviewed by Network Rail.

A spokesperson for TfL said: “We remain supportive of the plans to provide step-free access to the London Overground platforms at Seven Sisters, but this Department for Transport/Network Rail led project is currently paused while a funding shortfall is addressed.

” These additional costs are due to delays with the certification of a new type lift by Network Rail and general inflationary pressures. This project is being funded and delivered as part of the Department for Transport’s Access for All scheme and we hope to get clearer direction on how and when this will be delivered very soon.”

A DfT spokesperson said: “Everyone should be able to travel with ease and confidence, which is why this Government is committed to improving the accessibility of our railways.

“While this project would be delivered by TfL, Ministers are carefully considering funding for the Access for All scheme, and we will provide more details in due course.”
