Sheep left running loose in road after trailer crashes on bridge

A trailer carrying sheep has overturned in Melton. Emergency services were called to Leicester Street at the junction with the A607 at 11.45am this morning (Monday, January 6).

Leicestershire Police was called following reports that a tractor towing a livestock trailer had crashed on the bridge going over the River Eye. Pictures from the scene show the trailer, which had been carrying the sheep, left on its side.

Other images showed several sheep running loose in the road. An eyewitness called the situation “awful” and that everyone “tried the best they could” to help.

A police spokesman said there was “no information” on whether any sheep had been injured in the collision. Officers said no people were injured and no arrests had been made.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, who were also called to the scene, said that two fire crews remained at the scene on Monday afternoon. The vehicle is currently awaiting recovery.
