‘Shock of the year’ as East Lothian ice cream shop pulls ‘beloved’ treat due to factory closure

East Lothian residents are devastated after a much-loved ice cream shop has said goodbye to one of their ‘beloved’ treats.

Luca’s Ice Cream, which is based in Musselburgh and has a shop in Morningside, said that the decision to pull their chocolate wafer came as suppliers close their factory. Owners said ‘when they’re gone, they’re gone’.

This prompted disbelief from locals, who begged: “This can’t be true?”

It’s understood that the last remaining supplier of the nougat and beloved oyster wafer, Waverley Baker in Glasgow, has stopped production of them.

Posting to social media, Luca’s Ice Cream said: “After many delicious years, and many name changes (that we won’t mention), it’s time to say goodbye to our beloved chocolate wafer.

“Due to our suppliers closing their factory, this long-standing Scottish favourite will be gone for good. All remaining chocolate wafers are available in our shop now – once they’re gone, they’re gone!”

Colpi Ice Cream in Glasgow also told their followers of a similar fate. Manager Donald MacInnes expressed the impact on the business, telling STV: “It’s a big blow. It’s a huge loss to our business; there’s nothing that can replace it. It is by far our most popular product.”
