This morning (Monday January 6), many parts of Surrey are at risk of flooding following a weekend of snow and heavy rain. The Environmental Agency has issued 19 flood warnings and alerts for Surrey, seemingly, these warnings were warranted as flooding has already led to the closure of a multi-storey car park in Guildford.
Guildford Borough Council announced this morning that Bedford Road Multi-Storey car park had had its first level closed due to flooding from the nearby River Wey. This car park often faces the brunt of it when Guildford’s town centre experiences flooding, and it seems today it is no different.
The Guildford Borough Council statement read: “Bedford Road Multi-Storey Car Park Level 1 is closed due to flooding. The rest of the car park is still open. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
It is important that car parks which are susceptible to flooding are closed as to ensure that vehicles are not damaged.
It is expected that the closure of Bedford Road car park may cause some delays in Guildford town centre. It is advisable if you plan on visiting Guildford, to use car parks which in Guildford which are not at risk of flooding, such as multi-storey car parks on York Road, Leapale Road and on Sydenham Road.
The Environmental Agency has advised those who are in areas which are at risk of flooding to; move loved ones, pets and valuables to higher ground or the upper floor of a building, turn off the gas, electricity and water in your home if safe to do so and to put flood protection equipment in place where appropriate.
