Teenager arrested over Paisley Hogmanay fatal crash that killed 70-year-old woman

A teenager has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash in Paisley on Hogmanay.

The tragic incident happened at around 7pm on Tuesday, December 31, on Barrhead Road. Emergency services attended and 70-year-old Elizabeth Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested following the incident and has been released pending further enquiries.

It comes after Police Scotland released an appeal to the public in a bid to trace the driver of the vehicle which allegedly failed to stop after striking Elizabeth near to the east of the junction with Ladykirk Crescent.

In a statement issued on January 3, Detective Inspector Jan MacColl said: “Our thoughts are with Elizabeth’s family, friends and everyone affected by this tragic incident. Officers will continue to support her family as our enquiries progress.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the crash, or who may have seen a white car in the area around that time, possibly with damage, to come forward.

“We would also ask anyone with dash-cam footage that could assist our investigation to please get in touch.

“Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 2566 of 31 December.”

In today’s update, a spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “An 18-year-old man has been arrested following a fatal crash involving a pedestrian and a car in Paisley.

“The incident happened around 7pm on Tuesday, 31 December, 2024, on Barrhead Road.

“Emergency services attended and a 70-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man has been released pending further enquiries.”
