Teenager broke man’s finger in bus station attack after online dispute

Bus passengers looked on in shock as a teenager broke another man’s finger before he headbutted and kicked him following an argument that had started online. The fight at St Margaret’s Bus Station in Leicester city centre was all captured on CCTV.

The incident happened at about 12.30pm on Wednesday, August 21 when Chad Roberts-Richards attacked the man who had been standing close to him. The 19-year-old kicked the victim while he was down before a woman appeared to confront him and he walked away.

Moments later the victim – who was not charged with any offence – picked up an A-board from outside a business and went towards Roberts-Richards before putting it down and walking away.

Outling the case at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Friday (January 3), prosecutor Peter Bettany told the magistrates: “The headbutt caused pain and a red bump to appear. The victim also felt a sudden pain to the ring finger on his left hand.”

He said an X-ray later showed the finger was broken, while he also had bruising to the back and front of his head. Roberts-Richards, of Link Road, Anstey, was represented in court by Harvinder Gahir, who said the young men had met up to settle a dispute that started online.

He said: “He’s 19 years of age and extremely remorseful for his actions. This started online and they’ve met in the bus station at midday to confront each other. He couldn’t control his temper and so this incident started. It’s accepted there’s a headbutt and he’s kicked him while he’s on the floor.”

However, Mr Gahir questioned how the broken finger had been caused. He said: “Its clear that after they separate the complainant picks up a board and goes after my client. We don’t know how he broke his finger – whether it was punching back at my client or picking up the board.”

He added that Roberts-Richards had ADHD and issues with his anger. He said he was also being assessed for potential schizophrenia.

The magistrates decided that due to the seriousness of the incident, which crossed the custody threshold, they should adjourn the case for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by the Probation Service.

Roberts-Richards, who had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, will be sentenced after the report is completed.
