Gardai identify chief suspect in murder of young mother in Cork apartment
Gardai have identified a chief suspect in the murder of Paula Canty who was stabbed to death in an apartment in Mallow this week. We also covered an outpouring of tributes paid to the young mum-of-two who was from Kinsale, but moved to Mallow within the past year.
Officers formally upgraded the investigation to murder after a post-mortem examination confirmed that she had died from being stabbed.
Cork among counties with the highest number of road fatalities in 2024
Cork was among the worst counties for road traffic deaths last year, with one in every nine fatal collisions occurring on Cork roads. We reported on New Years Day as the Road Safety Authority released its end-of-year statistics, showing that 174 people lost their lives on Irish roads last year.
The figure is down 4% from last year’s total. However, 2024 is still one of the worst years of the last decade in terms of fatalities.
Red Light Cameras and automatic fines coming to Cork & Limerick after Dublin roll-out
Another motoring related story – a nationwide network of so called ‘Red Light Cameras’ is being activated, a decade on from the first trial in Dublin.
The first of these traffic light cameras are expected to be in place at the capital’s busiest junctions and along bus lanes within the first half of 2025. And there are plans to follow up with cameras in Cork, Limerick and Galway before the end of the year.
Cork community rallies for young man after ‘life-changing’ injury during GAA match
A Cork GAA club has launched a fundraiser in support of a young player who was left with life-changing injuries during a match.
Brian O’Connor (21) was representing Liscarroll Churchtown Gaels during a match in September when he was injured. Club Chairperson John Killeen had nothing but praise for the young player, commending Brian for his constant support for the club during this difficult period.
