Three arrested in Byker attack investigation after man in his 30s taken to hospital

Two men and a woman have been arrested over a reported assault in Shields Road, Byker, which saw a man in his 30s taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The victim has since been discharged. Northumbria Police said he had suffered “minor injuries consistent with being assaulted”.

Now three people have been detained in police custody over the incident – which took place at around 10am on Friday and saw an area including an alleyway close to Shields Road cordoned off. The three arrests include a man in his 40s who is suspected of unlawful wounding, a man in his 30s suspected of affray, and a woman in her 40s suspected of attempted wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 10am today (Friday), we responded to a report of assault on Shields Road in the Byker area of Newcastle. The man – aged in his 30s – was found to have sustained minor injuries consistent with having been assaulted.

“He was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. Three people have been arrested in connection with the report and remain in police custody at this time.”

The police reassured the public and appealed for anyone with information that could assist their enquiries to come forward. The spokesperson said: “Those involved are believed to be known to each other, and there is no wider risk to the public. Officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to the public.

Earlier, North East Ambulance Service confirmed one person had been taken to hospital following the incident. A NEAS spokesperson said: “On Friday 3 January, we were called to an incident on Shields Road in Byker, Newcastle, at 10.04am. We dispatched one ambulance crew, a hazardous area response team (HART), and a clinical team leader to the incident. One patient was taken to hospital.”
