A Renfrewshire family who defied chance when three generations were born on the same day are celebrating another milestone this year.
Andrew Ballantyne, from Erskine, made headlines in 2010 when he received the best birthday present, a grand-daughter. But it wasn’t the first time a coincidence like this had happened, as he also shares a birthday with his daughter Dawn Mylet.
There is a one in 130,000 chance that an event like this for a family could occur, and this year the grand-father is marking his 80th birthday.
Andrew was born on January 4, 1945, he shares the date with daughter Dawn, born 1974, and his grand-daughter Amy Hill (niece to Dawn) born 2010, reports The Record.
Amy’s mum Gillian said: “It’s always a hectic time for our family! I know the odds are ridiculous but this year it’s dad’s big birthday so he’ll be the star of the show this year!
“It was Dawn’s 50th last year too so my daughter hasn’t had a look in really the last couple of years, but she’s 16 next year so she’ll have to make up for it!”
Andrew Ballantyne lives in Erskine and is a retired company director from a printing business in Glasgow. He has been married to Patricia for 52 years. He had two daughters, Gillian and Dawn, and three grandchildren, Zoe 15, Amy 15 and my son Ryan 12.

Gillian added: “My dad underwent surgery on his face in December 2019 to treat skin cancer but otherwise is fit and well at the ripe old age of 80!
“When I was pregnant with Amy in 2009 I was given a due date of Christmas Day, however 10 days later, Amy appeared on January Natural birth, no induction. It was a brilliant birthday present for my dad!
“We will be celebrating at The Redhurst Hotel in Giffnock on Saturday which was a regular date-night spot when my mum and dad were courting.
“We are going away as a family to a holiday home in Scotland in February to continue the celebrations.”
