Tributes are pouring in for a ‘gentle and generous’ Cork man who died unexpectedly in the US last month.
Kieran O’Connell, who was originally from Crosshaven in Co Cork but had been living in New York for a number of years, passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital on December 27 after a brief illness. His body was returned to Crosshaven earlier this week.
A number of Kieran’s friends and family have paid tribute to the former Dublin City University (DCU) student, who is remembered as “a true friend, confidant, and beacon of light’ who ‘left an indelible mark on so many.”
A notice shared on RIP.ie stated that Kieran “is the dearly loved son of Barry (Finbarr) and Elizabeth, much loved brother of Cillian. Sadly missed by his loving parents, brother, aunts, uncles, sister-in-law Michelle, cousins, relatives and many friends.”
A message of condolence stated: “Kieran was a gentle and generous soul, always there with a friendly smile and nice conversations. Even at a distance, he always kept contact and brought some joy through funny memes and chats about life. I hope that we can all remember him fondly and celebrate his beautiful life. Thank you, Kieran, for being a friend.”
Another mourner wrote: “Sincere condolences to Kieran’s parents, brother and family. May your dear memories of Kieran help guide and comfort you through this difficult time. Kieran was a very kind and compassionate person and a dear special friend to our son Patrick. May he rest in eternal peace.”
A friend of Kieran’s added: “Expressing my deepest condolences to Kieran’s family and loved ones. Kieran was an incredible person and a true friend, confidant, and beacon of light. He left an indelible mark on me and so many others. He will be missed immensely. May he rest in peace.”
A number of Kieran’s friends from his days in DCU also shared memories of their time together, the Irish Mirror reports, with one person writing: “I have so many fun memories of him from our time in DCU and even had the pleasure of staying with him for a few days in New York and getting a taste for his wonderful life there. My heart goes out to all his family and friends, can’t imagine the pain you’re feeling. Kieran was such a kind and wonderful soul – and made some cracking good jokes too. At least we can know he lived his life to the full. You’ll be sadly missed by all who knew you.”
Another person added: “Sincere condolences to Kieran’s family. I met Kieran when at DCU many years ago and stayed in touch ever since. He was a warm, generous, caring and fun-loving person, with a wonderful sense of humour. He left a significant mark on this world and will be sorely missed. Shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.”
Kieran’s body was repatriated back to his native Cork earlier this week and his funeral was held on Thursday morning in St. Brigid’s Church in Crosshaven.
