A homeless support group in Cork city is in desperate need of transport so they can provide vital hot food and drinks to those in need during the cold weather.
Hazel Dennehy – co-founder of the non-profit soup run Street Angels – is asking for anyone with a vehicle and a few hours to spare to help with their first soup run of 2025 tomorrow (Monday 6th January). Their team will also be hosting a vigil on the night for Cork man Peter Casey, who had been using the group’s services for a long time and sadly passed away on Christmas Day.
The Street Angel’s van broke down yesterday – the worst possible timing as much of Cork’s homeless community is relying on them for support during the cold weather. If Hazel is unable to find transport to bring their tables and equipment into the city to set up for 7pm, both the vigil and the soup run may have to be cancelled.
Speaking to CorkBeo, Hazel said Peter was a very close friend of hers and the Street Angel’s team is expecting a huge turnout at their event tomorrow.
Hazel said: “The van broke down yesterday and now I’ve nothing to do the soup run or the vigil with tomorrow. I have another jeep, but that’s broken too at the moment and the quote I got for repairs was very expensive. Peter was a very close friend of mine. He had always been there to hold me up for every vigil we did last year, and I’d hate to have to cancel on him.”
Hazel is looking for anyone with a vehicle – who is available tomorrow afternoon/evening – to collect her from her home in Mallow and help bring equipment down to Cork city. This gear must first be picked up from storage at Twopothouse near Doneraile.
After their soup run is finished, Hazel will then need someone to bring the gear back to the storage and drop her back home.
Anyone who thinks they might be able to help is asked to contact Hazel on 0857757986.
