Victim left fighting for life after Chesterfield pub garden attack

A man was left fighting for his life after being attacked and stabbed in a Derbyshire pub garden. Derby Crown Court heard how the victim repeatedly had a Stanley knife blade thrust into him by David Davies after first being headbutted by Jordan Basnett.

Two other defendants then helped the pair following the stabbing which happened in the beer garden of the Woodside pub, in Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, on April 13, 2023.

Alan Turner hid the knife in a car and Adrian Cherry drove the pair away from the pub after they flagged him down. The victim, a man in his 30s, sustained a slash wound to his face, a stab wound to his lower abdomen, and a stab wound to his upper back.

He was taken to Northern General Hospital, in Sheffield, in a life-threatening condition and required extensive treatment, including emergency surgery and a blood transfusion, to stabilise him. The victim has been left with life-changing scarring on his face.

Basnett, 31, of Butterton Drive, Holme Hall was arrested on April 20, 2023 and Davies, 41, of no fixed address was arrested on June 6, 2023 and found with a Stanley knife in his pocket.

They were subsequently charged and appeared at a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Monday 2 December 2024. Basnett admitted wounding with intent and was jailed for five years.

Davies admitted wounding with intent and possession of a knife in a public place and was jailed for five years and 10 months. Cherry, 54, of Firvale Road, Walton was arrested on April 18, 2023

Turner, 52, of Oakamoor Close, Holme Hall was arrested on May 31, 2023. Following charge, both admitted to assisting an offender and were jailed for six months suspended for a period of two years with 20 rehabilitation days.

Cherry was ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work and Turner ordered to serve a three-month curfew between the hours of 8pm and 7am. Detective Constable Sullivan, officer in the case: “Were it not for the care and expertise of the medical staff at Northern General Hospital, the injuries which Davies and Basnett inflicted on the victim could easily have been fatal.

“The pair showed complete disregard for the seriousness of this attack and no remorse. This has been a long and protracted investigation, and I would like to thank the staff at the Woodside pub who have assisted us with enquiries throughout to ensure that these men are not free to socialise and wreak havoc in our communities.”
