Wayne Rooney suffers fresh blow as Plymouth Argyle documentary scrapped

Plans for a TV documentary to ‘celebrate’ Wayne Rooney’s move from star player to manager have been thrown into doubt – after his disastrous spell in charge at Plymouth Argyle. The former England striker was sacked by the Pilgrims after leaving them rock bottom of the Championship.

He now faces fresh embarrassment with doubts a planned TV documentary will ever be screened. The Manchester United legend arrived at Home Park midway through Euro 2024.

He was joined by a camera crew, with the intention of filming a documentary around his first season with Plymouth. But those plans were thrown into doubt at the start of December when it was reported that the production was under threat.

It was claimed that the point of the documentary was to ‘celebrate’ Rooney’s move from player to manager. There was a belief that the production would be pulled if Rooney’s reign became a ‘horror show’, reports the Mirror.

He failed to win a game away from home, with his side falling to multiple hammerings on the road. Rooney was dismissed following their defeat to fellow strugglers Oxford United. It leaves the documentary’s future up in the air, with The Guardian claiming it has been scrapped.

It is the second time Rooney has been sacked in the same year, following his exit from Birmingham City in January. He was handed another crack in the second tier by Plymouth, who had three managers over the course of last season.

Argyle remain winless away from home this season, and picked up only their second clean sheet this campaign on Saturday, a goalless draw at Stoke City. The poor run of form prompted Plymouth to let Rooney go, along with assistant Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland.

First team coach Kevin Nancekivell and Club Captain Joe Edwards have been placed in charge of Argyle until they find a permanent replacement for Rooney, who paid tribute to the players and fans following his departure from the club.

He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with.

“Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future.

“Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
