A Galway man has claimed his well-known neighbour has been “causing misery” in the area over an ongoing road spat which has seen Galway County Council get involved.
The dispute centres around a soakway in a rural Galway area, just one of the many in the county. The soakway, a hole dug in a patch of ground or a wall to soak up excess surface water and prevent flooding, was installed near the local man’s house.
However, the hole in the wall between the the local road and the field through which the floodwater flows was allegedly blocked by the man’s neighbour.
The local man told Galway Beo that the actions of his well-known neighbour are “causing misery for his neighbours”. He claims his neighbour is blocking a drain with rocks, clay, plastic and even a sileage bale, which has caused hazardous flooding along the local access road and outside the local man’s home.
Images seen by Galway Beo show the clear soakway in early December before another image, taken just one day later, shows plastic, rocks and clay blocking the soakway.
And other images supposedly show flooding caused by the blockage, a local road and the entrance to a home can be seen in inches of water.
The bale of silage can be seen at he gap in the wall where water is supposed to flow into the soakway.
Due to the blocked soakway, the local man claims he has been forced to use greater and greater numbers of sandbags to stop the floodwaters seen in December 2024 from approaching his home.
The local man told Galway Beo that he has even placed cones and tape around the area to warn motorists of the sudden flooding along the route.
The local man also informed Galway County Council who confirmed that they would send a crew to investigate and open water tables in the area in the coming days.
The local man had praise for the council and for his local representatives for their “trojan” work in keeping the soakways open in the many areas of Co Galway at risk of flooding.
