Woman and girl ‘seriously injured’ in Birmingham head-on crash on major road

A woman and a girl suffered ‘serious injuries’ after a two-car crash on a major Birmingham road. The head-on incident took place in the A34 Perry Barr Expressway underpass near Birchfield Road and High Street, Aston shortly before 8.30pm on Sunday (January 5).

Three ambulances a paramedic officer, a MERIT (Medical Emergency Response Intervention Team) trauma team and a critical care paramedic were sent to the scene. They found three patients which required treatment.

A woman driver of one car and a girl who was her passenger were badly injured and received trauma care at the scene, before both being taken to separate hospitals. While the driver of a second car was less seriously injured but was also taken to hospital.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the A34 Perry Barr Expressway underpass near Birchfield Road, Aston at 8.29pm on Sunday (January 5) to reports of a two-car collision.

“When our medics arrived, they found two cars which had been involved in a head-on collision. The driver of one car, a woman, was assessed by ambulance staff who administered trauma care to her serious injuries.

“She was conveyed on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further emergency treatment. A girl, a passenger from the same car, also sustained serious injuries.

“She too received trauma care by the team before she was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for specialist care. The driver of the second car, a man, suffered less serious injuries but required further treatment at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.”
