Woman in hospital after water rescue as emergency response spotted near Kirkintilloch Wetherspoons

A woman is in a Glasgow hospital after firefighters launched a water rescue in Kirkintilloch.

The dramatic scenes occurred close on Southbank Road on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal shortly after 5pm Sunday (January 12). Emergency services were seen near the Kirky Puffer Wetherspoons pub on Townhead after being called to reports of a person in the water.

Two fire engines, an ambulance and three Scottish Ambulance Service special operations response teams raced to the scene near Canal Bridge. The woman was pulled from the water by firefighters and placed in the care of paramedics.

She was then transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 5.03pm on Sunday, 12 January to reports of a person in the water near Canal Bridge in Kirkintilloch.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances specialist resources to the scene. One person was removed from the water and placed to a position of safety, before they were handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews then left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 17:07 to attend an incident on Southbank Road, Kirkintilloch. We dispatched one ambulance, three special operations response teams (SORT), and one critical care paramedic (CCP) to the scene. One patient was transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 5.10pm on Sunday, 12 January, 2025, to a report of a person in the water near to Southbank Road, Kirkintilloch. Emergency services attended and a woman was taken to hospital.”
