Woman killed in crash on Liverpool Road named by police

Road closures remain in place and people are being told to avoid the area

A woman who was killed after being hit by a car has been named. Emergency services were called to to the junction of Liverpool Road and Hillside Road to reports of a crash involving a Mazda and a female pedestrian at around 4.40am today, Thursday, January 16.

Merseyside Police previously said the woman suffered serious injuries but have now confirmed she died at the scene. The woman has been named as Catherine Dodd, 59, from the Huyton area.

Her family is being supported by specialist officers as enquiries continue. The driver of the car, a 35-year-old man from Huyton, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving. He has been taken to a police station for questioning.

Merseyside Police said a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous police contact with the victim.

A road closure remains in place in both directions on Liverpool Road from junction 2 of the M57 to Blue Bell Lane. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, Lead Investigating Officer from our Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts and condolences are with victim’s family at this tragic time, and we will do all we can to establish the circumstances.

“For this reason, we are very keen to speak to anyone who was passing by or close to the junction of Liverpool Road and Hillside Road at around 4.40am. You may have captured valuable evidence via your dashcam or other devices and be unaware, so please check and come forward at the earliest opportunity.

“Road closures will remain in place this afternoon so please avoid the area and updates will be issued when the road is reopened.”
